Privacy Policy
Readthru is an iPhone app for actors. It reads the other roles of a scene aloud, follows your lines as you say them, and films your take. This policy explains what the app saves on your iPhone, what leaves it, and who receives it. It also covers this website, readthru.app.
At a glance
- There is no account. The app does not ask for your name, your email address or a login.
- Your voice is turned into text on your iPhone. The app uses Apple’s speech recognition on the device only, and sends your voice nowhere.
- Filming is on unless you turn it off. Your takes, scripts and notes are saved on your iPhone. We do not receive them.
- Partner lines read in the iPhone’s voice do not leave your iPhone. Voices made with Google’s Gemini are not offered yet for scenes you add. When they are, the text of the partner lines read in those voices will go to Google through our server. Section 5 says what will be sent and kept.
- No analytics, crash reporting or ads. The app has no code from other companies that collects data. It does not track you, and we do not sell personal information.
- This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics (section 12).
1. Who we are
Readthru and this website are provided by Darak (sole proprietorship), represented by Sangkwun Kang, in the Republic of Korea, who decides how the personal information in this policy is processed. Write to tony@readthru.app with any question about it. Sangkwun Kang is responsible for privacy and answers at the same address.
2. Information we process
Apart from the statistics Apple may give us without your name (section 7), we, and the companies in section 9 for us, keep only the information below. Everything else in this policy stays on your iPhone.
| Information | What for | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Emails you send us: your email address, and the name and message you write | To answer you, and to keep a record of questions and complaints so we can answer them again | 3 years after your question is settled, a period we set, then deleted. Sooner if you ask |
| Website access records: the time, the page, your IP address and your browser type | To deliver pages and protect the site | We can see them in our Vercel account for at most 30 days. Vercel keeps them otherwise as its privacy policy says (section 12) |
| From when server voices are offered, not yet (section 5): the identifier of the key the app makes on your iPhone, kept as a hash, and the key’s public half; how many requests each key and the whole service made that day; one-time values used to check requests; our server’s request records (the time, the address requested, the result, the sizes, how long it took, the IP address the request arrived from, and the app’s name and build number with the iOS system version). In the records we checked, that IP address was Google’s own front end, not your phone’s | To check that requests come from the real app, to keep each iPhone and the whole service within daily limits, and to run and protect the server | The key: 90 days after the app proves itself, then the app proves itself again. Daily counts: 2 days. One-time values: 15 minutes at most. Request records: 30 days. When its time is up, an item is no longer used and is deleted automatically, which can take more than a day |
Our server keeps neither the text of partner lines nor their voices (section 5).
3. What stays on your iPhone
The app saves these on your iPhone:
- Scripts: the text you paste and the sample scenes, the roles, the voice chosen for each role, and how lines are hidden for practice.
- Run records: for the 20 newest runs of each script, when each was and how long it took, which lines you said as written, changed or left out, and the words the speech recognition heard you say. The notes after a run are made from these.
- Takes: the video and sound recorded while filming is on (section 4), each with the record of its run.
- Partner voice files: the audio of partner lines, so that a line is not voiced twice.
- Settings: whether filming is on, the text size, where the camera window sits, and the slate details you type when you export a take (name, height, agency). Once server voices are offered, also the identifier of the key the app uses to prove itself to our server.
We do not receive any of these, and the app does not sync them with iCloud. If you have turned on iPhone backup (iCloud Backup or a backup to a computer), iOS can include your scripts, run records, partner voice files and settings in the backup. You decide that setting. The app keeps takes out of backups.
4. Microphone, speech recognition, camera and Photos
The app asks for these permissions:
- Microphone and Speech Recognition, to hear your lines while you run a scene. The sound goes to Apple’s speech recognition on your iPhone. The app requires recognition on the device and does not use Apple’s server recognition. If your iPhone cannot recognize the script’s language on the device, the app stops and tells you, and sends nothing. The words it recognizes are saved in the run record on your iPhone (section 3). The sound itself is saved only while filming is on, as part of the take.
- Camera, for filming. Filming is on unless you turn it off in the settings or on the practice screen. While it is on, the app films you with the front camera as you practice, and saves the video as a take on your iPhone. The first time, it tells you it is filming and waits for you to go on.
- Photos (add only), if you save a take to Photos from the share sheet. This lets the app add the video. It does not let the app see your photos.
You can refuse each permission, or turn it off later in Settings › Apps › Readthru. Without the microphone and speech recognition, the app cannot run a scene. Without the camera, it cannot film.
5. Partner voices
The app reads partner lines aloud in one of these ways:
- The iPhone’s built-in voice. iOS makes the sound on your iPhone, and nothing is sent. Partner lines of the scenes you add are read this way.
- Voices that come with the app. The partner lines of the sample scenes were voiced in advance with Google’s Gemini and are part of the app. Playing them sends nothing.
- Server voices, not offered yet. We plan to offer voices made with Google’s Gemini for the scenes you add, as part of a paid subscription. When such a line has no voice on your iPhone yet, the app will send our server the text of that partner line, the name of the voice, and a short delivery note taken from the script’s stage directions. With them it will send a proof that the request comes from the real app: a key identifier and a signature made with Apple’s App Attest. To set up that key, iOS will ask Apple to vouch for the app, under Apple’s privacy policy. Our server will run on Google Cloud in Seoul. It will pass the line, the voice name and the note to Google’s Gemini API, asking Gemini not to store them, and return the audio to the app. It will keep neither the text nor the audio. The app saves the audio on your iPhone, so the same line is not sent again.
Your own lines, your voice and your takes are never sent. Google processes the text of server voices as data of a paid Gemini API customer. Under the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service, Google does not use it to improve its products. Under the abuse monitoring section of the Gemini API usage policies, Google keeps the text and the audio it made for 55 days, to detect and prevent prohibited uses and to make disclosures the law requires. Authorized Google staff may look at a request that Google’s checks flag.
What our server keeps to stop misuse, and for how long, is in section 2. If that changes, we will change this policy first.
6. Exporting and sharing a take
When you export a take, the app makes a video file with the picture, your sound, the partner voices if you choose to include them, and a slate card if you add one. The app then opens the iPhone’s share sheet, and you choose where the file goes, for example Save Video. The file goes only where you send it. When the share sheet closes, the app deletes its own copy.
7. What we do not do
- We do not show ads, collect the advertising identifier, or track you across other companies’ apps and websites.
- The app has no analytics or crash-reporting code from other companies.
- We do not sell personal information. We give it to no one else, except the service providers in section 9 or where the law requires it.
- The app does not ask for your location or your contacts.
If you have chosen in iOS to share analytics with app developers (Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple may give us crash reports and usage statistics about the app. Apple collects these under its own privacy policy and gives them to us without your name.
8. Deleting information, and keeping it safe
- On your iPhone, scripts and settings stay until you delete them in the app or delete the app. For each script, the app keeps the 20 newest run records and the 10 newest takes you have not exported, and deletes older ones. A take you have exported stays until you delete it. Deleting a script deletes its run records and takes. Partner voice files stay until you delete the app. We have no copies.
- Emails: when the period in section 2 ends, or when you ask, we delete them from our mailbox and its trash.
- Website records are deleted by Vercel (section 12).
- Our server’s records, from when server voices are offered, are deleted automatically when their time in section 2 is up.
To keep information safe, the app keeps your data on your iPhone, where iOS protects it, and does not ask for an account. This website and our email use encrypted connections (HTTPS).
9. Service providers and transfers outside Korea
We entrust the work below to these companies. Where the table names a place outside Korea, the information in that row is transferred abroad.
| Recipient and contact | Information, and the work | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Avenue #4133, Covina, CA 91723, United States. privacy@vercel.com | Website access records (section 2). Hosting this website | United States and other places where Vercel has servers |
| Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, United States. Data protection contact for Google Workspace and Google Cloud | Emails you send us (section 2). Receiving and keeping our email (Google Workspace) | United States and other places where Google has servers |
| Google LLC, as above | From when server voices are offered, not yet: the text of partner lines, the voice name and the delivery note (section 5), and our server’s records (section 2). Running our server (Google Cloud) and making the voices (Gemini API) | Republic of Korea (our server, planned for Google Cloud in Seoul), United States and other places where Google has servers (the Gemini API, the server’s request records and Google’s network that requests pass through) |
- When and how: when you open a page on this website, when you send us an email, and, once server voices are offered, each time a partner line is voiced. Always over encrypted connections.
- How long: as section 2 says. Google keeps the text of server voices for 55 days (section 5).
- How to refuse, and what follows: if you do not want this, do not visit this website and do not email us. We then cannot answer you by email. The app itself works without either. Once server voices are offered, they will come with a paid subscription. If you do not want partner lines sent, do not subscribe, or cancel your subscription: partner lines are then read in the iPhone’s voice and nothing is sent.
Under Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act, these transfers rest on Article 28-8(1)(iii)(a), and this policy discloses what Article 28-8(2) requires.
10. Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your personal information, or ask us to stop processing it. Depending on where you live, laws such as the GDPR in Europe and the UK or California law may give you further rights. Where a law asks for a legal basis, we process information to make the app and this website work and to answer you.
To use these rights, write to tony@readthru.app. Someone you authorize, or your legal representative, can also ask for you. We answer without delay. Apart from your emails, the website’s access records and the statistics Apple gives us without your name, we hold nothing about you. We will tell you what we can do.
If you are in Korea, you can also ask these bodies for help with a privacy problem:

11. Children
Readthru is not directed at children under 14, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. The app asks no one for a name, an age or contact details. If you think a child has sent us personal information, tell us and we will delete it.
12. This website
readthru.app has no account, no forms and no ads. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and loads nothing from other websites. Vercel hosts it. Like any web server, Vercel records each request: the time, the page, your IP address and your browser type, to deliver pages and protect the site. We can see these records in our Vercel account for at most 30 days. Vercel keeps them for the shortest period it needs, under its privacy policy, which names no fixed period. We do not use them to find out who you are.
13. Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we post the new version on this page with a new date. If a change means the app sends something it did not send before, we post it here before the app starts sending it. This version takes effect on November 4, 2026.
